Virgin Births

I decided to post this story after reading an essay on Red Ravine called Why Writers Don’t Write About Sex.

Virgin Births
By Christine Swint
I first noticed Luke Ogden’s angelic smile during Algebra class. He turned his head to look over his right shoulder, and cherubic rays beamed from his eyes straight at me. [...]

Crabapples and Sand

Crabapples and Sand
By Christine Swint
Crabapples strewn about the yard,
I gather them from the dirt
between the roots.
The brick apartments
shaded, a yard dotted with trees.
Sunlight, red leaves, the fruit
red, striped with black hidden
in my hands.
She turns to look
Don’t eat them you’ll get
A stomachache.
Standing in shadows at the edge
Of our play, the mothers
Murmur their concerns.
The beach, flat, stretches

Five Buddhist Precepts

I’ve recently started a meditation practice using a CD and a book by Sharon Salzberg and Joseph Goldstein, two of the founders of Insight Meditation in Barre, MA. I share this new practice in a spirit of happiness, not pride. I add this disclaimer, because I don’t want to sound like a spiritual snob. [...]

Gaming, Punk, Ska, and Skating

I dropped off my youngest son at his friend’s house for a band practice, after which the boys headed for Mellow Mushroom and an all night video gaming party. Yes, I said all night. Ten or so boys spent the night at a lock-in, a relatively recent phenomenon. A game room in our area [...]

Death and the Real World

Woody Allen’s famous quip about dying sums up what I think about my own death: “I’m not afraid of death, I just don’t want to be there when it happens.” Annie Dillard has said that Americans think they can skip death. When I view my life in a microcosm, my world of strip malls, subdivisions, [...]
